Mom really dodged a bullet this time.
The surgeon was right: her heart was surrounded by bloody fluid, a result of her bleeding out from the high INR level. Talk about your bleeding heart, this is sure not what we ever imagined. The surgeon said he removed about one quart of fluid from around her heart. He also removed about a quart of fluid from around her left lung, and over a quart from around her right lung. Is it any wonder that she could not breathe?!? She likely would not have survived much longer, had she not gotten to the ER when she did. I wish we had collectively realized how bad it was and gotten her there sooner, but things worked out. We certainly did dodge the bullet this time.
I was worried that there could be bleeding elsewhere, particularly her brain. A friend’s Dad had a brain bleed from a too-high INR and had a stroke as a result. With a 10, I don’t know how that didn’t happen. She had a few moments of disorientation over the weekend, so I was nervous, but she seems to be totally back to her normal self. I’ll still be on the watch for anything unusual, but it looks like that was another bullet we dodged. (I certainly pray that is the case.)
Mom is recuperating well and was discharged from the hospital today. She sounds like herself again, has an appetite again, and, most importantly, she can breathe again. She even has some pink to her cheeks. What a difference it makes when your heart and lungs are working properly! They will now be monitoring her INR levels daily for a while until they know her counts are stable. Why this didn’t happen from the get-go is anybody’s guess, but we are extremely grateful that she is alive and well.
Now that Mom is home and seemingly out of danger, I can start my countdown again… now only 3 days until I leave for California! I am really looking forward to it, and I’m even packed already… well, as packed as I can be. I’m not crazy about getting up at 3:00 a.m. to get to the airport in time for my 6:00 a.m. flight, but I’ll have time to sleep during the flight. Just a small price to pay.
Latest recipe from “Isa Does It”… “White Wine Risotto with Peas and Shiitake Bacon”. Yes, you read that correctly shiitake bacon..! Oh my, is this ever delicious! The risotto is very creamy (made with cashew cream) and the “bacon”… it’s great! Made with shiitake mushrooms, soy sauce, olive oil and liquid smoke, it’s just amazing. I am so excited that I can have that salty flavor and crispy texture on a mushroom! Who knew? Anyway, the whole family loved it.
