First, an update on Mom: She was moved out of ICU Saturday night around 7 pm, after having a few of the many devices removed and after passing her sugar test. Despite having had absolutely nothing to eat, her sugar was a little higher than the doctor wanted, so she wasn’t able to leave ICU until her sugar level stabilized. It did that around 7 pm and by 7:30 she was on the telemetry floor.
The pain early Saturday was quite unbearable… to the point where my mother, who does not handle any type of drugs well, asked for the morphine (and later Tylenol with codeine). This abated the pain, but resulted in continual nausea. Since Thursday night all she has eaten is 3 spoonfuls of Jello. She has been very tired and has been able to get some sleep in between all the nurses’ and doctors’ visits.
Today, they did remove the 3 drainage tubes that were in her abdomen, and she seems to be left with only the regular IV. Tomorrow, it is expected that she will start to move around more. I believe the pre-surgery materials indicated that she has to walk at least 50 feet. Hopefully that will help with some of the pain and discomfort. Just laying in a bed (or chair) for hours on end is enough to make her stiff and uncomfortable.
She is now trying to manage the pain with plain ol’ Tylenol (no codeine) in order to get rid of the nausea. She’s got a pretty high tolerance for pain, so hopefully it will work as the pain gets more tolerable each day. Her vitals have all been great though, and it seems she is doing really well (minus the pain and the nausea…). She actually has color in her cheeks, with has been missing for a quite a while.
I appreciate all the good wishes and prayers for her continued healing. She did say today that this is the LAST surgery she will ever have. Looking forward to better days ahead.
Second, I ordered a new cookbook last week “Isa Does It: Amazingly Easy, Wildly Delicious Vegan Recipes for Every Day of the Week”. I’m in the process of reading it cover to cover. Yes, reading the whole thing, including each recipe! It’s a great book, for all levels of cooks & vegans. The first section of the book is to get you prepared, the recipes all use pretty normal ingredients, and she is very instructional. I can’t wait to try some of the recipes. For any of you newbie / wannabe plant-based people, I highly recommend this book. While I’ve determined that I am doing pretty well with my cooking skills, I am learning SO much from this book. (The book is rated 4.9 out of 5 stars on Amazon.)
