This past weekend was round one of my “girls just want to have fun” tour! My sister-in-law, Dessa, and I traveled to the Niagara Falls area to visit our friends, Susie and Barb. Dessa’s Thelma and my Louise (or is it my Thelma and Dessa’s Louise…?) were a bit like our movie counterparts in that we were excited to get away for a long girls’ weekend (but luckily we had none of the same tragic events)!
We started our day on Friday with an early departure after breakfast at my parents’. We stopped for a leisurely lunch after taking the scenic route through western New York. We arrived at Susie’s early afternoon and it was wonderful to see our friends. We spent a few hours catching up and enjoying several glasses of wine (I can’t remember the last time I had more than two!). We went out for dinner and spent the rest of the evening huddled around the television watching the events in Boston unfold.
On Saturday, we awoke to, of all things, SNOW! And the snow was blowing sideways, it was so stinkin’ windy. Not to be discouraged, I still managed to talk my less-than-willing friends to take me to Niagara Falls. We spent $10 for parking, and spent barely 10 minutes at the Falls! Dressed in our spring coats, we were not equipped to handle the 35 degree temps, the brutal wind, and the mist from the Falls (which stung our faces like sleet!). I was able to snap a few photos before we decided the casino was the better option!
Dessa and I both had good luck on the penny slots, winning $40 and $102, respectively. Although we enjoy gambling, it’s not something we do with any regularity, so we were pretty pleased with our winnings!
Barb made us a delicious lunch of comfort foods: homemade mac & cheese and tomato soup! Delicious! Afterwards, we did some shopping and my dear friends took me to another frigid body of water: Lake Ontario! I urged them to also take me to Lake Erie, but they had had enough me and waterways at that point!
We had dinner at a charity event supporting the YWCA’s program for victims of domestic abuse. The wine continued to flow, and we guffawed much of the night. Nothing like those laughs that move you to tears! It felt so good to laugh like that, reminiscing about so many good times in our somewhat younger years! Dessa and I both said the weekend was everything we hoped it would be.
We arrived home yesterday afternoon and finished our weekend with a family dinner. It’s always nice to be home, but it was definitely a great weekend with some of my favorite people!
It was nice to see that Susie and Barb both sported FitBits, so there was some competition on who could get the most steps! (I usually lost!) And I appreciate all their efforts to give me lots of healthy, vegetarian options all weekend!
Thanks, girls, for your hospitality!!! And thanks, Dessa, for being such a great travel companion! (When do we leave for Key West??!?) Love you all!
