Today was the first time since chemo started that I needed to drive Ethan’s down to meet up with his stepmom for his weekend away. Thus far, Ethan’s dad has been making the full round trip, rather than our usual meeting halfway. But today he was working, and since I am feeling ok, I made the trip. I did take my dad with me, just in case I needed a back up driver, and I did take a nap before driving, at the urging of my most lovable nags. The trip was uneventful save the construction standstill about 10 miles away from my destination. That was a little frustrating and added about 35 minutes to my round trip, but I had the stamina for the full round trip.
I continue to get compliments on my wig, and last night was the final validation, as I saw my stylist for the first time since the head shaving / wig donning event. She loved the wig, the color, everything and just trimmed up the back a bit for me. Now I can truly wear it in confidence. 🙂
Ethan told me today that they are learning about cancer in science class. I was actually pretty impressed with that. Given the prevalence of cancer in the world, I think this is a great lesson for kids. Ethan was able to talk to me about how the cells grow out of control, what some of the factors were that caused cancer, and even the three treatment options: surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. While a shame that this needs to be taught to kids at all, it really helped us have a great conversation about the disease and hopefully it worries him less. Ethan did seem almost apologetic when he shared with me that he told the whole class that I was dealing with breast cancer and that I had no hair. I was actually really proud of him.
