I’m not sure how many of you watched “Stand Up To Cancer” last night. I did, and managed to cry through most of it. Some of those stories were just so heart-wrenching, especially when small children are involved. The new song by Taylor Swift, “Ronan”, did me in. (http://www.azcentral.com/thingstodo/music/articles/2012/09/07/20120907taylor-swift-song-inspired-phoenix-boy-ronan-thompson.html)
The statistic that really blew me away is that 1 in 2 men, and 1 in 3 women, will get cancer! I can’t even comprehend that. I know that 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer, and the more names I hear, the more I really believe that statistic. The intentions for today’s Race for the Cure was enlightening… so many women I know (and many that I hadn’t even realized).
So this is my reminder to all of you to go for your regular screenings! If you are overdue for your mammogram or pap test, promise me you will call on Monday and make an appointment. For those of you 50 and over (and I know a whole bunch of people who turned 50 this year…), it’s time to go for that colonoscopy. Yes, the preparation is a little pain the ass, but the procedure itself is easy and the benefits are worse a little bit of inconvenience. Men: have that conversation with your doctor about whether you should be tested for prostate cancer. It’s so important to be your own advocate for your health. If your doctor doesn’t bring it up, make sure you do, particularly if you have any family history. (For the record, I am diligent about all my screenings. I went pap and mammograms annually. I have a skin check up annually. I have been going for colonoscopies since I was in my thirties, due to family history. And I continue to go for annual CT scans and chest x-rays as follow ups to my kidney cancer.)
Enough nagging. 🙂
Juicing update… I got adventurous yesterday: nectarine, apples, lemon, pineapple, carrot, cucumber, celery, spinach and ginger! It was amazingly delicious and I drank about 40 ounces! I made a similar juice this morning, with a little more fruit, and had Ethan help me. He got quite a kick out of pulverizing the fruits and vegetables, and when we were done, he had a tall glass of the juice himself!! I was quite happy about that.
Sugar fast, Day 4: No temptations!
No word from the doctor yet. I seem to be a little more “fluid-y” today. I almost feel like I’m 13 again! 🙂 Look forward to being aspirated again on Wednesday!
Have a great weekend everyone!
